Crockpot Pork Shoulder Roast

Last night’s local feast featured a pork shoulder roast from our friend Nate, mashed potatoes made with Gary Bye’s Pontiac reds and local (Burbach’s) milk, plus some applesauce I’d canned last year from an abandoned apple tree in the neighborhood.
The roast was maybe three pounds, bone-in, and it was still a little frozen from having [...]

Eatin’ Good in the ‘Hood

There’s no question that my neighborhood is home to more than its share of excellent cooks.  Whether its Jason of the weekend breakfast bonanza or John of the sourdough loaves and chocolate chip cookies, or (if I do say so myself) my local food fetishism.
Shall I just come right out and say it?  I’ll bet [...]

Simple Late Summer Casserole

In tribute to the BlogHerFood 2009 convention in San Fran (which I am missing here in SoDak), I’m whipping up a late-summer casserole of thin-sliced zukes, tomatoes, sweet red peppers, and shavings of yellow onion.
It’s a pretty simple prep and a lovely dish: oil the casserole with EVOO, then start slicing–grating a bit of Asiago [...]

Shorter Days

Back from the farmers market and all unpacked.  The sun was setting as I headed home at about quarter after seven, having torn down and packed up what was left of a pretty good day of sales.
The produce left over was only enough to pile a small basket full, and now it’s on my kitchen [...]

Today at the Market

Today I’ll be bringing tomatoes (mostly paste/sauce–the season is ending for tomatoes!), sweet bell peppers, relleno stuffers, and Hungarian Hot Wax peppers.  I’ve got several boxes of the little mixed cherry toms as well–and I DID pick the Coyotes today, so they’ll be in the mix.
For greens, I’ve got spicy mustards (only a couple bags!), [...]

Hot Wax and Squash Leftovers

Back from the farmers market with some left over produce.  What’s an intrepid farm girl to do?
Not one, but two food preservation preparation projects:
First item on the menu–finely chop fifteen cups yellow squash, six cups yellow onions, and several red and green sweet peppers, then salt down for making zucchini relish tomorrow.
While this may seem [...]

Whatcha Bringin’ to the Eat-In?

Just a reminder that tomorrow–Labor Day Monday–is the Vermillion Community Eat-In.  It starts at 5pm at the Armory, and promises to be a blast!
Bring a potluck dish–preferably one made with local foods and/or not highly processed.
I’m not sure what I’ll be making yet–it’ll likely be a matter of cruising the gardens to see what looks [...]

Today at the Market

I’ll be bringing all kinds of great produce!
Peppers: three kinds–sweet bells, relleno stuffers, and Hungarian Hot Wax.
Eggplant: Lavender Touch–beautiful creamy fruits with a pale purple blush.  I pick ‘em smaller so they’re tender and mild–not seedy or bitter.
Tomatoes: All kinds of heirlooms, and I’ll be sampling some of them today.  Never could bring yourself to [...]

Elk Point Market Today

I’ve decided to head on over to the Elk Point Farmers Market today (Tuesday) from 5-7pm.  There are a few regular Vermillion vendors who sell there as well, and it’s a nice midweek jaunt for me.
I’ll have Marvel of Venice heirloom yellow pole beans, tender young summer squash and a basket of big stuffer/breadmaker squashes [...]

Gettin’ It Onnnn–(for tomorrow’s Farmers Market)!

Boy do I ever have a lot of great veggies for tomorrow’s market!  I’m going to have to put another table into commission to hold it all!
I won’t be at next week’s market, as I’m going on a little last-ditch summer vacation before the fall semester starts.  So, I’m pulling out all the stops with [...]
