For me, learning about raising food is part of coming home. My grandpa Lloyd and his family farmed rented land near De Smet, South Dakota until the Great Depression, when times got too tough. Broke and fearing a hard winter, they fled to the land of milk and honey (a.k.a. California, where I was born and raised).

Now a job has brought me back to South Dakota, where I can sink my hands into the soil and help to build community in ways that just aren’t possible when you live in a metropolitan area with millions of people.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the seasons of a farm year. And hoping we get fireflies!
