First Reading of Itinerant Merchant Exemption Passed

Cross-posted from the Vermillion Area Farmers Market site.

In a last-minute meeting with myself, Chamber Director Steve Howe, and City Manager John Prescott yesterday morning, we were able to hammer out an all-vendor-inclusive exemption for farmers markets from the itinerant merchant ordinance.

That exemption was presented to the City Council last night, and passed with a unanimous vote. The exemption provides everything we needed to keep the vendors we have and continue to grow the market without undue registration or financial burdens for the vendors or the market.

Thanks to all for your calls, e-mails, conversations, and letters of support, as well as to those whose presence and words of support at last night’s meeting confirmed public enthusiasm for the market and our vendors.

The final vote on adoption of the exemption into city code will take place during the Monday, April 19th City Council meeting at 7pm.
