Beware the Pogonip!

I had to do a quick post after I heard SD Public Radio’s Jazz Nightly host Uncle Jimmo mention there’ll be freezing fog tonight in parts of South Dakota.

For those who aren’t Old Farmers’ Almanac junkies–there’s an actual meteorological term for freezing fog, and it’s one of my all-time favorite weather-related words:

Pogonip.

You’re not supposed to breathe it in, but it forms some really cool-looking icy needle formations (called hoarfrost when they condense on a surface–I like that hoary word, too).

Read about the (fascinating!) etymology (along with other related pogo- words) and see cool pictures here.
